News: ABC edits the word "Jesus" out of a recent broadcast of "The View" to
avoid offending viewers --
http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/arts/AP-TV-Bleeped-Jesus.html
Comment: Interestingly, this affected only the taped version of "The View"
that was aired on the West Coast. The allegedly offending word went out live
to the rest of the country.
The article makes a good point about how all kinds of offensive language is
used on TV on purpose for shock value, but when a guest on "The View" utters
the word "Jesus" (from the quote cited in the article, apparently in a
light-hearted yet respectful manner), all kinds of (I hope this word doesn't
offend my readers) hell breaks loose.
Would ABC also have edited out the word "Buddah"?
News: Some research shows that contact with trees and animals has health
benefits --
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A54318-2002Jun3.html
Comments: By contact, they don't mean running into a tree with your car or
getting eaten by a shark. They mean "biophilia", or communing with nature. I
guess the tree-huggers will live longer than the lumberjacks.
News: ET, where is your home? NASA hunts for cosmic critters --
http://www.nytimes.com/2002/06/04/science/space/04LIFE.html?8isc
Comment: I think the motivation is clear. Finding life elsewhere in the
Universe is the only thing that will jump start the manned space program.
