News: I got the ETX-125 and my new tripod together and did some observing Saturday night in Leelanau County.

Comment: In the morning, my patient wife helped me "scope out" a location at a county park west of Maple City. We went back there around 11 p.m. and it was very dark and quiet. Got some terrific observations of the Hercules globular and the Whirlpool Galaxy. But I need to check my owner's manual and trouble shoot the tracking mechanism on the scope. It was not tracking very smoothly.

News: Vanessa's home for the week!

Comment: We picked her up at Detroit Metro Sunday night. She hasn't been back here since Christmas, so she was staggered by the heat and humidity. Much different than the Bay area.

News: Howard Kurtz of the Washington Post says we can't trust anybody -- http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A7191-2002Jul1.html

Comment: Big business is sure taking it on the chin. Maybe that's a reason to think small-is-better. Are small business owners more honest and responsive to their customers than big businesses?

News: Supreme Court voucher decision has implications beyond just education -- http://www.nytimes.com/2002/06/28/national/28EDUC.html

Comment: I'm still fired up about this court ruling. A commentary last night on NPR got me thinking about another angle, namely, if vouchers are ok for education, then why not for all kinds of government services ? (kudos to NPR for actually airing a commentary that supports vouchers.)

For example, Food Stamps are simply vouchers that can be spent on food in any supermarket. But if Food Stamps worked like public education, then you'd only be able to spend your Food Stamps at your neighborhood, government-funded Public Food Store. You could take their price and service, or starve. No shopping around to get the best deal.

Vouchers of all kinds are the wave of the future. People today are too well-educated and too prosperous to put up with being strong-armed by government bureaucrats.

News: SBAM holds its annual meeting -- https://www.sbam.org/resource/digest/features/062702.html

Comment: Tim Kissman does a nice job mixing pix and text to tell the story quickly and concisely.

News: Assembled my JMI Megapod and attached my new scope. Looking forward to testing it out...

Comment: I eagerly watched the skies as night fell...clear, clear...cloudy! Aargh! But I'm taking it up north this weekend. Maybe I can find a clear-sky site.
