News: Beaten LA teen to file suit against cops:
http://msnbc.com/news/777480.asp?pne=msn
&cp1=1
Special guest comment from Brandon: "I thought this was pretty
interesting...What bothers me though is the civil rights aspect and the
lawsuit the family will probably file. I'm absolutely fine with having the
officer fired and having felonies charged on him but shouldn't that be it ??
I mean.. there is so much gray space when it comes to race crimes type
crimes. The officer could be racist against non-Caucasians.. but then again,
being an officer in Inglewood, CA he probably deals mostly with African
Americans. There is not really a way to tell unless the officer says
something that would allude to either case.. and even then it's hard to say.
Why should the family be entitled to any lawsuit money from the CA police
department ?? I think it's just silly how people can sue for practically
everything --
Sure.. the kid probably has some bruises and feels mistreated.. but that's
why the cop will be fired and probably be found guilty of some felonies!
right?"
News: Good article by Andrew Sullivan that puts into perspective the
business fraud scandal:
http://www.andrewsullivan.com/main_article.php?artnum 020630
Comment: Kind of an antidote to the way the general media is covering the
story. Basically, he points out that historically, this kind of corrupt
behavior by a few very bad apples is not unusual. As always, the vast
majority of business people are honest and hard working.
You think business leaders are bad today? Harry Truman made a name for
himself as a U.S. Senator by investigating corrupt war industry practices
during WWII. Cheating and stealing during a war for our national survival --
that's a lot lower than anything going on now.
News: Baseball's All Star game in halted in the 11th inning last night:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A47237-2002Jul10.html
Comment: There was an All Star game last night?
I used to really enjoy following major league baseball. Now, I could not
care less.
News: More clear skies last night, so got the scope out again.
Comment: Did not feel like heading out into the country, so I observed from
the backyard. Yuck. Light pollution is bad. But, I still viewed a couple of
double stars I haven't seen before. Learning more and more about the
capabilities of the scope.
CAAC potluck tonight at 7 p.m. at MSU Observatory.
