News: Some cable Internet providers are cracking down on wireless networks
that poach their bandwidth: http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1105-942339.html
Comment: I guess this is widespread in San Fran (is it, Vanessa?), where a
coffee shop, for instance, gets a cable modem connection, hooks up a
wireless network and then lets anyone come in and connect with their
wireless notebooks. So, I suppose from the cable company standpoint you've
got freeloaders sucking bandwidth away from paying customers. An analogy
would be here in Michigan, where some mornings everyone in the neighborhood
is watering their lawn at the same time...and that means low water pressure
for the rest of us.
When you sign a cable modem contract that specifically says you can't set up
a wireless network and give away access, then you better stick to the letter
of the contract. So I don't really have any sympathy for the poachers.
A better idea is to negotiate a deal with the cable modem company to permit
bandwidth sharing.
News: Baseball great Ted Williams was a Marine fighter pilot in the Korean
War:

Comment: He flew alongside John Glenn, who later became the first American
in space.
Today, it seems really bizarre that a big sports hero would take a break
from his career to go off and fight in a war. It would be like Kobie Bryant
going off to fight in Afghanistan. Different times and sensibilities, I
guess.
