News: Long but interesting article about latest theories of how the Universe
works --
http://makeashorterlink.com/?U2B623551
Comment: Among the latest findings -- less than five percent of the Universe
is ordinary matter, 73 percent is mysterious dark energy that is causing the
Universe to expand faster and faster every year, and there are some
questions that scientists still do not know how to ask, let alone answer,
scientifically. Was there anything before the Big Bang? Is there a role for
life in the cosmos? Why is there something rather than nothing at all? Will
we ever know?
I like to think about weird stuff like this when I'm peering through my ETX
at night.
News: Gyrating stock market is freaking everyone out --
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A49323-2002Jul23.html
Comment: One casualty is plans to privatize a small part of Social Security.
My mother-in-law points out, with some justification, that some people would
lose their Social Security money if they invested it in the stock market.
But not reforming Social Security is not an option. In 20 years the outflows
will overcome the inflows of contributions. Privatizing at least some of the
Social Security system is one of a number of options that will eventually
have to be explored.
Remember, our political system is designed to make it very difficult to
achieve change unless conditions are so dire and drastic that it forces a
consensus to unite around a solution. We'll be there soon for Social
Security and then we'll fix it. But it will be much more difficult and
expensive the longer we wait.
