News: Tuition at MSU to go up 8.5% next year --
http://www.detnews.com/2002/schools/0207/17/a01-539209.htm
Comment: MSU tuition, at $6,400 a year, is still a lot cheaper than U of M
($8,000). It seems odd that tuition hikes are so huge when general inflation
is only about 1.5% this year. It's interesting to read the article's
explanations of why costs go up, year after year: when there are lots of
students, it costs more to serve them, but...when there are fewer students,
you have to charge more per student because you are still paying for
buildings and faculty. So, they seem to say that it doesn't matter if
enrollment goes up or down (in other words, if they are gaining or losing
customers) -- tuition is going to keep rising.
Why do people complain but still pay? 1) They feel that an education at MSU
or U of M is worth paying extra for, compared to going to a cheaper school
like Central or Ferris, 2) The cost of tuition is heavily subsidized for
many students by scholarships and aid programs 3) Students are willing to
work, save and/or borrow money because they know a college education from a
good school is the best investment they will ever make.
News: Did some Moon viewing last night.
Comment: Murky skies and lots of mosquitoes, but still some nice views of
the Moon. Jane and a few of her kids stopped by to take a look.
