News: Warning that "Fireplace log may cause fire" wins award in fifth annual
contest of nation's wackiest labels --
http://www.mlaw.org/_pages/wwlabelnewsrelease.html
Comment: This is actually kind of old news, but it's the first time I ran
across it and I thought you all might be amused.
What's not amusing, of course, is a legal system that makes business owners
feel they must put goofy labels on products to protect themselves from crazy
lawsuits. What's even worse is that crazy lawsuits make the general public
lose respect for the legal system, which makes it more difficult to attack
genuine product liability problems. In other words, a system that makes it
appear that everything is worth a lawsuit contributes to an attitude that
nothing is worth a lawsuit -- that all liability claims are nonsense.
News: Martha Stewart may be toast. Read how she got roasted on TV when she
was trying to make a salad --
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A47371-2002Jun26.html
Comment: How's that for mixed imagery! Toast and roast. Anyway, it seems
pretty clear that Martha got tipped off to sell some stock just before news
came out that caused the stock price to nosedive. This "insider trading" is
against the law.
Will this bad publicity for Martha the person affect Martha the media
conglomerate? Hard to say. Does her target group of K-Mart customers really
care (or understand) her stock trading scandal? The whole mess underlines
the hazards of building a brand around one all-too-human personality.
News: Aaack! Will Mike ever stop getting new astronomy gear?
Comment: My new Meade hard-shell case is really sweet. Not just an larger
version of the cheap EXT-70 case. The 125 case has robust metal hinges and
latches. However, still not sturdy enough to protect the scope from dropping
or crushing dangers. But certainly adequate to keep out dust and prevent
bumps and scratches.
With any luck, today I'll get my tripod, and man oh man, I'll be a
keypad-punchin' computer astronomy maniac.
