News: If the skies clear up, don't the miss grouping of Venus, Jupiter and
Moon in western sky tonight and next couple nights:

News: Article about the people who cut Indiana limestone to help rebuild the
Pentagon: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A14183-2002Jun7.html
Comment: Lots of interesting stuff here. I did not know that a 25-mile-long
section of Indiana near Bloomington is the source of the limestone used for
most of our nation's major buildings and monuments. Thanks to Brandon for
passing this along.
News: Hazards from a "dirty bomb" are relatively modest. Panic is the
biggest problem:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A28433-2002Jun10.html
Comment: I certainly believe people would go crazy over the threat of
radiation exposure, although the article points out that mostly you would
just have to ditch your contaminated clothes and get showered as soon as
possible. People are very ignorant about radiation. I remember the lunatic
protests that accompanied proposals to build low-level radioactive waste
storage facilities in Michigan.
News: Scientists discover that the Sun has dynamic weather systems on its
surface, including hurricanes:

Comment: I remember being about 4 or 5 years old and asking my mom "what
makes the sun shine?" She said it was a big lump of burning coal, which
while inaccurate was at least comprehensible to my little mind.
We still have a lot to learn about the sun, especially how fluctuations in
the Sun's energy output affect weather on Earth. Geologically speaking, it
wasn't that long ago that the Earth was locked in an Ice Age. So a little
global warming is probably a good thing.
