News: Virginia man charged with intentionally infecting his wife with HIV -- http://makeashorterlink.com/?Z13E23711

Comment: What a creep, to say the least.

Check out the last paragraph in the story: "The wife said she recently got the news that she had tested positive for HIV. She said she became depressed and began missing work. 'Finally, I decided I didn't need to be with this guy,' she said."

Gee, you think so?

News: A profile of Paul Kurtz, the publisher of Skeptical Inquirer magazine -- http://makeashorterlink.com/?T24E20711

Comment: Skeptical Inquirer performs a useful service debunking silliness like UFOs and Bigfoot sightings.

But I'm disturbed by Kurtz's smug atheism. Here's the last line of the story: "He (Kurtz) concluded, 'Islam and Judaism and Christianity are false.'"

I think his belief (and that of many other people) is that it's impossible for intelligent, scientific people to be religious.

That's seriously wrong-headed. It's refuted by the Vatican, which funds astronomical research, for cryin' out loud.

The problem is that scientific people don't understand modern religious philosophy, and religious people don't understand modern scientific thought. I strongly recommend a tremendous book by Brown University biologist Kenneth Miller "Finding Darwin's God: A Scientist's Search for Common Ground Between God and Evolution"( http://makeashorterlink.com/?G2F632711). Miller is a Christian who defends evolution and makes a reasoned case for peaceful co-existence between religion and science.

News: Did some more Moon observing last night with my new ETX-125

Comment: Atmosphere was considerably less steady, probably because it was a warm day and heat was pouring off local houses and pavement. And I'm getting tired of observing off the edge of our wooden deck. You'd think the deck was solid as a rock, but when you are observing at high power through a telescope sitting on top of the deck, you see every little wiggle and vibration magnified.

News: Saw my first Mercedes SL500 is the parking lot of the University Club in East Lansing -- http://makeashorterlink.com/?N51E35711

Comment: Wow! Photos don't convey what a beautiful car this is. A work of art on wheels.
