News: Strange undersea noise may be moans of a deep sea monster?:
http://www.cnn.com/2002/TECH/science/06/13/bloop/index.html
Comment: Noises were picked up by Navy surveillance system. Frequency of the
sound indicates it is biological, but much louder than the noises produced
by the largest whales.
Pretty creepy. Speculation is that it could be a giant squid...kind of like
"Squidy" on The Simpsons.
News: That wail of anguish you hear is small business owners bemoaning the
U.S. Senate failing to approve a permanent end to the federal death tax:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A41393-2002Jun12.html
Comment: This is nuts. Current law says that unless Congress acts, the death
tax will be eliminated in 2010, but then...and this is the crazy part...be
reinstated the following year, with a top rate of 55 percent and an
exemption for assets of up to $1 million.
I was disappointed but not surprised to read that Michigan's U.S. Senators
Stabenow and Levin both voted against a permanent end to the death tax.
Sure, most small business owners' heirs don't have to pay the death tax, but
only because the small business owners spent thousands and thousands of
dollars on "estate planning" to avoid the tax. Ask any CPA!
There's an old saying that "nothing is certain except death and taxes." I
guess our senators want to make sure that remains a part of the tax code.
