News: Israeli scientist breeds a featherless chicken. You've got to see the
picture -- http://www.nytimes.com/2002/05/24/international/24CHIC.html
Comment: The picture is bizarre, but if this isn't a hoax (I'm not convinced
that someone's not pulling our chicken legs here) then a featherless chicken
makes a lot of sense. The chickens stay cooler, so they can be raised easier
in hot climates; they don't have to be plucked; and you don't have any
feathers to dispose of. What will they think of next!
News: Gripping story in the Washington Post about Army Rangers fighting for
the lives in an Afghanistan battle --
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A1951-2002May23.html
Comment: This story reminded me a lot of "Blackhawk Down", the 1991 battle
of Mogadishu. What's most impressive is the skill and bravery of the U.S.
soldiers. Their friends are getting killed all around them, but these
Rangers keep their wits about them and are able to fight back.
News: Study says a hormone may cause you to become more hungry the more
weight you lose: http://www.nytimes.com/2002/05/23/health/23FAT.html
Comment: Must be evolution at work. Our bodies are designed to force us to
become hungry and seek out food if it seems like we are starving (like when
we've lost a lot of weight). But the study only contained 28 people, and
researchers cautioned that the hormone may not be the cause of all obesity.
The lesson is that we should give overweight people some slack. They may be
trying their hardest to lose weight, but sometimes it takes more than just
will-power and determination.
