News: Gizmo marketed in Japan claims to translate dog barks into people speak -- http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1103-908889.html

Comment: Hmmm...I'm pretty skeptical. The company also claims their device detects doggy feelings and records their emotional outlook through the day. Do Japanese dogs bark in Japanese?

News: You want big news? How about a new theory of the Universe? -- http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A8245-2002May12.html

Comment: I don't think many people outside of the astronomy-geek world are aware of last year's discovery that the expansion of the Universe is accelerating. This new theory tries to explain what that discovery means.

Humans like stories with a beginning and an end. A Universe that expands at an accelerating rate has a beginning (the Big Bang) but no end that could be ever detected, not even in theory. It may take a while for religious leaders and philosophers to catch up with the implications.

News: Speaking of bangs, security officials are worried about belt bombs appearing in the U.S. This article will scare you --http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A8238-2002May12.html

Comment: The only answer will be for the U.S. to make countries that support suicide bombing really pay a price. When are we going to invade Iraq?

News -- Star Wars costume fanatics go crazy this week: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A8162-2002May12.html

Comment -- As a guy who skulks around at night, looking at the sky through a computer-controlled tube, who am I to criticize someone's weird-sounding hobby? But dressing up as an Imperial Storm Trooper does seem a little, uh, loony?
