News: What happens when computer programmers have too much time on their hands -- they develop an image recognition system to keep a cat from bringing mice into the house -- http://www.quantumpicture.com/Flo_Control/flo_control.htm

Comment: Look this over and you've got to be impressed with the sheer technical cleverness of the system. Actually, this is not the work of deranged computer hobbyists. They are in the business of making image recognition software and this is a very clever pr gimmick. Rather than talk about image recognition of people (which many of us find kind of creepy) they focus on fuzzy, friendly felines.

News: Companies may see productivity drop because so many of their employees will sneak out to see the new Star Wars movie -- http://money.cnn.com/2002/05/06/news/companies/darthvirus/

Comment: Well, Roger Ebert ( http://www.suntimes.com/output/ebert1/cst-ftr-ebert10.html) gives the movie a lukewarm (or is it a Luke Skywalker) review, so maybe not as many guys will call in sick just so they can see the flick.

News: Few high school kids know anything about history: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A60096-2002May9.html

Comment: This is really too bad. I can remember high school classmates complaining to the history teacher, "What do I have to know this stuff for? I'll never use it!" Well, when you don't know anything about the history of our country's wars, how can you judge whether President Bush is following the right strategy in the war on terrorism? Or if you haven't heard about the Holocaust or WWII, how can you have an informed opinion about what the Israelis are going through?

Lack of knowledge makes you a victim.
