The Ski Boy and I took advantage of the very cold and rainy afternoon to head off to the Anchorage Museum of History and Art. We caught the last day of Northern Adventure - The Art of Fred Machetanz and first day of Rarefied Light - the annual Alaska juried photo exhibition.

Fred Machetanz is a revered Alaskan artist. His work, especially in later years, could sometimes approach caricature. However, much of his work is truly wonderful. And it's a real treat to see so much of it assembled in one place. My one disappointment was that his lithographs were underrepresented.

Rarefied Light was good - but for some reason, this year's entries just didn't float my boat.

Below is one of my favorite paintings from the Machetanz exhibit:

Kyrok, Eskimo Seamstress

Oil on Masonite

It's forty degrees and pouring rain. Everyone is scrambling to unpack their winter clothes - a month early. We Alaskans are usually a hearty bunch. But during the past two days, I've noticed that absolutely everyone is wearing a coat - even the teenagers.
