Shake, rattle, shake

Seven earthquakes between 0.8 and 3.4 magnitude within a half hour, starting less than an hour ago. Epicenter at 3 miles SW of Gilroy, so that's maybe 15 miles from here. Enough to make me nervous. We're about 12 miles from the epicenter of the 1989 Loma Prieta quake, which left several neighboring houses knocked off their foundations. Which may explain why I still jump whenever someone slams a door.

Employee satisfaction redux

More unrest seen among tech workers. This article highlights the disconnect between managers and employees. Compare the closing lines of this article--

"Without strong positive ties to work or the work experience, employees have little incentive to go the distance or deliver consistently top performance," Donald Lowman, a managing director of Towers Perrin, said in a statement. "Organizations may face real risk when the economy improves and top talent begins looking for greener pastures elsewhere."

--to the closing line of the article linked earlier. Companies who continue to use up their employees because the can, under current conditions, will lose their best employees when their chance comes.
