100 things about me

"A person should hear a little music, read a little poetry, and see a fine picture every day in order that worldly cares may not obliterate the sense of the beautiful that God has implanted in the human soul." - Goethe

Stardust

"US scientists have for the first time collected samples of the stuff of songs and dreams - stardust."

"And now the purple dust of twilight time
Steals across the meadows of my heart
Now the little stars, the little stars pine
Always reminding me that we're apart
You wander down the lane and far away
Leaving me a love that cannot die
Love is now the stardust of yesterday
The music of the years gone by."

   --from Stardust (lyrics by Carmichael-Parish)

Schoolboy's Wasteland
"Schoolboy was raised on a goat farm in the hills of a small town in northwest Ohio known as Sycamore. Son of a......Electrician and Betty Crocker, Beau always had a rapist wit and a creative mind."  Go see Beau Hufford's extraordinary digital artwork, and after you finish looking at the erotica (because I know that'll be the first link you click) be sure to check out the daily quirks.

Lunchtime observation

There is absolutely no reason to serve yeast rolls with beef stew.  Everyone knows stew can only be eaten with cornbread.  Additionally, stew is not stew without some form of tomato included.   Just a random thought...

What is your favorite type of literature to read (magazine, newspaper, novels, nonfiction, poetry, etc.)?
My taste in literature varies depending on my mood, but I will read just about anything put in front of me. I tend to prefer fiction, poetry and erotica, but I also love biographies, cookbooks and true crime.  I'll resort to reading the phonebook and the fine print on cans of hairspray if I don't have anything else around.

What is your favorite novel?

Winter's Tale by Mark Helprin

Do you have a favorite poem? (Share it!)

I have many favorite poems so it’s hard to chose just one as they are all uniquely different.  My favorite poet is e e cummings although I’m also in love with Baudelaire and Emily Dickinson. My most recent love affair is with Pablo Neruda, and I’ve purchased two translations of his work recently.   I'm especially fond of this one..

Cat's Dream

How nicely a cat sleeps,
sleeps with its paws and its gravity,
sleeps with its cruel claws,
and with its sanguinary bloods,
sleeps with all the rings
which, like burnt circles,
compose the geology
of a tail the color of sand.
I would like to sleep like a cat
with all the hairs of time,
with the tongue of flint,
with the dry sex of fire,
and after speaking myself over the whole world,
over the roof-tiles and the ground,
intensely determined
to go hunting the rats of dream.
I have seen how the cat as it slept
would undulate: the night
flowed in it like dark water,
and at times it was going to fall,
maybe it was going to plunge
into the naked snowdrifts,
or it grew so much as it slept
like a tiger's great-grandfather
that it overleapt in the darkness
Roofs, clouds, and volcanoes.
Sleep, sleep nocturnal cat,
with your ceremonies of a bishop
and your mustache of stone:
supervise all our dreams,
manage the darkness
of our slumbered powers
with your sanguinary heart
and the long collar of your tail.
--Pablo Neruda

What is one thing you've always wanted to read, or wish you had more time to read?

Next on my list is My Wars Are Laid Away in Books: The Life of Emily Dickinson by Alfred Habegger.  I wish I had more time to read period.

What are you currently reading?

Other than the poetry I’ve mentioned, I’ve reading Sophie’s World by Jostein Gaarder, Flesh and Blood by Jonathan Kellerman, Best Friends by Martha Moody, Lofting by Alma Marceau, and Bitch: In Praise of Difficult Women by Elizabeth Wurtzel.
