another song from childhood and appropriate for New Year's Day
Somewhere overindulgence is just fine
In a land that I heard of once in a nursery rhyme
Where lemon drops fall from the sky
And ice cream clouds go floating by above me
Where earth is made of chocolate cake
And mud pies just taste really great
Is where you'll find me
Somewhere overindulence is just fine
You can eat all you want to, no one will draw the line.
Sung to the tune of Somewhere Over the Rainbow
To mark the end of the holiday season we salute the Norwegians. My old notebooks have some rather strange entries.
Lutefisk, O lutefisk
How fragrant your aroma
Lutefisk, O lutefisk
You put me in a coma
You smell so strong, you look like glue
You taste just like an overshoe
But lutefisk, come Saturday
I think I'll eat you anyway.
Lutefisk, O lutefisk
I put you in the doorwary
I wanted you to ripen up
Just like they do in Norway
A dog came by and sprinkled you
I hit him with my overshoe
O lutefisk, now I suppose
I'll eat you while I hole my nose.
Lutefisk, O lutefisk
How well I do remember
On Christmas Eve how we'd receive
Our big treat of December
It wasn't turkey or fried ham
It wasn't even pickled Spam
My mother knew there was no risk
In serving buttered lutefisk.
Lutefisk, O lutefisk
Now everyone discovers
That lutefisk and lefse make
Norweigians better lovers
Now all the world can have a ball
You're better than that Geritol
O lutefisk, with Brennevin
You make me feel like Errol Flynn.
Lutefisk, O lutefisk
You have a special flavor
Lutefisk, O lutefisk
All good Norwegians savor
That slimy slab we know so well
Identified by ghastly smell
Lutefisk, O lutefisk
Our loyalty won't waver.
Sung to the tune of O Tannenbaum
I note that I am not of Norwegian heritage, but grew up in a town with more than a few lutefisk lovers. Lutefisk, for the uninitiated, is pronounced LOOT-uh-fisk and is dried Cod soaked in lye. It is said that you can get rid of rats under your barn by throwing in some ripe lutefisk, but you have to deal with a plague of Norwegians...
