Over the years Sukie and I have dealt with more than a few sick ferrets. Seven is currently the problem child with a bad heart condition and several other things that make it amazing she is still with us.
One of the real challenges is getting food into them when they are having bad days. Years ago we discovered that ferrets have something of a taste in music. They all love being sung to and a few of them like certain CDs. Seven likes singing (I'm a terrible singer and it would be embarrassing if anyone heard me) and really likes females voices doing harmony with a happy tune. I've been using some cuts from The Be Good Tanyas (praised on this blog before - trying searching for information). In particular she seems to love The Littlest Birds from their Blue Horse album.
At the moment it is very early and Sukie is still in bed so I have the headphones from the iPod near Seven's breakfast dish ... it works terrifically well - just put the song on loop. For variety she also likes Dar Williams - Iowa in particular.
A strange piece that works moderately well has been pointed out here before, but was recently suggested by Larry. The important feature is that you can tune the music ... Sherman likes voices 2,3 and 4; Ashling can deal with all of them, bur likes 2 and 4 together; and Scooter likes everything together.
Horse doo-wop for ferrets ...
speaking of doo-wop ...
but back to musical ferrets..
Years ago our ferret Spot would happy accept any live singing, but had a distinct preference for happy light classical music ... the Boccherini Cello Concerto went over very well for that little guy. Other ferrets have loved yodeling and one loved the spoken word of a certain NPR reporter...
Meeteetse loved the voice of NPR's Richard Harris. This was pointed out to NPR who did a brief piece on it. When she died they did a five minute eulogy - more than many heads of state.
And now we have Ashling dancing to Jeff Lang. This is some rather amazing slide guitar music.
