I can't say that I can recommend this high speed potato canon to the average kid looking for an interesting project, but it is impressive!

A few amateur scientists have built some interesting projects. This amateur magnetometer is at the level that a smart and patient high school kid could build.

Very cool stuff!

How far can the SUV trend go?

Thanks for the link Jim!

On a related note, the NY Times is reporting that the feds are talking about improving SUV safety. It is remarkable that people buy these for the safety of their family - sort of like smoking cigarettes to lose weight.

I've seen three SUV rollovers (note that this is a lawyers site) and one nearly hit me. It is pretty frightening to watch. One of these was a local teenage driver who was driving an Explorer. He has a modified van for his wheelchair now - it must be tough to be young and paralyzed.

One wonders if the SUV craze may be peaking. Although there is every reason for the automakers to push these, there is also an emerging social pressure. I've seen more than a few SUV drivers make apologies for their vehicle choice in the last few months. Even the fluffy network evening news on TV is airing a few negative SUV pieces (remarkable when you consider the advertising clout of the automakers).
