Our Fearless Leader

Bush: New U.N. resolution helpful, but not necessary

Our president has managed an amazing thing.  He's taken the widespread support that the United States had for action against terrorism after the 9-11 attacks and turned it into millions of people around the world demonstrating against the US.  The United States is now being compared to Nazi Germany (a huge stretch), a oil-hungry nation (pretty accurate), and a country with a cowboy from Texas at its head who doesn't care what the rest of the world thinks (he seems to welcome this image).  Here's a quote from President Bush when asked today what he thought about the millions protesting against a war with Iraq:

"Size of protest, it's like deciding, 'Well I'm going to decide policy based up on a focus group.' The role of a leader is to decide policy based upon the security — in this case — security of the people," he said.

"Democracy is a beautiful thing, and that people are allowed to express their opinion," he said.

"Some in the world don't view Saddam Hussein as a risk to peace," he added. "I respectfully disagree."

There's no question that Saddam Hussein is a risk to peace -- in his own country.  The big problem that Bush has is he hasn't proven to the rest of the world that Saddam is a risk to us now, or that there aren't bigger problems in the world worth focusing on first.  Is it worth it to send American soldiers into harm's way to deal with Iraq?  Osama Bin Laden hasn't been entirely dealt with.  North Korea is declaring it would beat the US in a nuclear war.  And there are problems within our own borders in regard to the economy, education, and health care.  He has yet to adequately address those issues and show why Iraq must come first.  Maybe Iraq is the most serious threat in the world -- but Bush hasn't proven it.  Instead it just looks like he has a personal vendetta against Saddam or wants Iraq's oil, and Bush isn't doing much to change that image.  Worse yet, Bush is turning many of our friends in the world against us.  If so many people are against what he is doing, it might do Bush some good to at least appear as though he is considering what they have to say.  Instead he projects an image that says, "To hell with the rest of the world!"

On top of that, I don't see too many people standing up in the US protesting against Iraq.  No counter-demonstrations supporting the president.  Seems like most people are very unsure about why this war needs to take place. It also seems as though the president is allowing people to voice their opinions, but he isn't willing to consider them.  That's the image he is presenting and it is very unfortunate.

Hundreds of thousands of protestors took to the streets of Sydney, Australia, Sunday, Feb. 16, 2003, to show their opposition to a U.S.-led war against Iraq, continuing a massive anti-war protests around the world that kicked off in Australia two days ago. (AP Photo/Dan Peled)

On a more amusing note, here is a list of protest slogans taken from signs, t-shirts, and bumper stickers from all the demonstrations this past weekend.  I got it from Jane Galt who may have gotten it from somewhere else since I've seen in on other sites.  Some are kind of funny in a sad way:
