The Decline Of Civilization Continues
Here's the chorus to the number one song in America, "Get Busy" by Sean Paul, according to Billboard's online chart:
Yo sexy ladies want par wid us In a tha car wid us
Them nah war wid us In a tha club them want flex wid us To get next to us Them cah vex wid us From tha day me born jah ignite me flame Gal a call me name and tis me fame It's all good, girl turn me on 'Til a early morn' Let's get it on Let's get it on 'til a early morn' Girl it's all good jus turn me on
Very classically written song. Owes so much to the past as it calls out to our future. I'm not ashamed to admit I was wiping away tears of joy as I listened to it. Don't believe it has its roots deeply in the annals of music history? Proof:
Them nah war wid us: Here the lyrics allude directly to Edwin Starr's Vietnam protest song, "War," where he answered the eternal question of what war is good for: nothing. What's "Get Busy" good for? Gettin' busy, fool!
In a tha club them want flex wid us: Couple of references here. The most obvious being the physical interaction between the males and females recalling Olivia Newton-John's 1981 hit, "Physical." The flexing could also be alluding to Duran Duran's hit song, "The Reflex," from 1984. Either way, Sean Paul is so 80's.
Jah ignite me flame: Harkens back to Jim Morrison urging his woman to "light my fire." Or perhaps Cheap Trick's hit from the 80's, "The Flame." Sixties? Eighties? You pick! Sean Paul has ya covered, dawg!
Gal a call me name and tis me fame: Ok, no need for me to point out the obvious, but by not writing the correct "call my name," and instead writing "call me," Sean Paul is giving a huge shout-out to Blondie and their hit, "Call Me," from the movie American Gigolo. Keeping the movie theme going, he references the film, Fame, in the same line. Coincidence? I think not. Gonna live forever? I think so!
Let's get it on: Marvin Gaye!! Need I friggin' say more?
Well, yes, I do. "Get Busy" -- song that many of us will proudly look back on in twenty years' time, perhaps listening to it with our kids, and explaining that this was the song that brought mommy and daddy together. A warm and fuzzy moment to look forward to, I'm sure. Happy listening.
