Prom

Here in Eagle Pass, that special night of the year has come:  prom.  With it comes the extravagant dresses, extreme hair styles, and the chance to cap-off your high school years with a evening filled with loud music, complicated clothes, and those awkward moments when you and your date try and figure out what to do next.

Ah, the memories.

I just have that one picture to remember the prom of 1989 by.  And admit it:  I look damn sharp in that tux.  If memory serves, it was the most expensive one for rent at the formal wear shop downtown.  I wasn't going to be accused of not going all-out on this night!

My date was my high school sweetheart.  Our romance didn't last too far into college, though.  We were in separate towns and eventually she decided that spending time with someone in her own zip code was more important than keeping in touch with me.

But back to tonight.  I won't have a chance to wander over to the prom this evening, but I'm wondering who will be sporting the most hairspray?  Or cologne.  Or the skankiest dress.  Or who will have exercised poor judgment in squeezing into a dress a couple of sizes too small?  Or better yet, who is going to show up at the prom and be the one that nobody paid attention to all year, but for one night no one can take their eyes off her?

That's the great thing about the prom.  This one night will end up being the best night so far in the lives of a least a few young people.  Sure it'll be loud and sure it'll be awkward at times, but that's what growing up is all about.

Don't Miss The Bus

Now while I mentioned yesterday that parents need to be a bit more responsible for the actions of their offspring, I didn't necessarily mean they need to zap the lil' buggers with a stun gun.

Besides, once the eight year old gets to class after being cattle prodded for several miles on the way to school, I'm sure he'll be in the mood to sit down and apply himself in the classroom.  Now I can't admit to ever having been zapped by a stun gun, but I must guess that it gets your day off to a below average start.  Probably right up there with banging your toe on the coffee table a few dozen times first thing in the morning.

By the way, he got the stun gun by trading a pack of cigarettes for it.  Nice to know bartering is alive and well in the trailer parks of our country.  Maybe for two packs of smokes he could have gotten a taser and some pepper spray.

So in the end, dad gets two years in the hole for this.  I'll go out on a limb and predict that he won't be getting too many Father's Day cards this year.
