"What kind of peace do I mean? What kind of peace do we seek? Not a Pax Americana enforced on the world by American weapons of war. Not the peace of the grave or the security of the slave. I am talking about genuine peace, the kind of peace that makes life on earth worth living, the kind that enables men and nations to grow and to hope and to build a better life for their children - not merely peace for Americans but peace for all men and women - not merely peace in our time but peace for all time." -- JFK

One bit of good news in Iraq: General Sanchez has realized we have to stop shooting down Iraqi civilian by-standers, and we'd better be careful, generally, not to provoke more Iraqis to shoot at us.

Reported in the New York Times:

"Unquestionably, I think, we created in this culture some Iraqis that then had to act because of their value systems against us in terms of revenge, possibly because there were casualties on their side and also because of the impact on their dignity and respect," Sanchez said.

"It was a fact that I started to get multiple indicators that maybe our iron-fisted approach to the conduct of ops was beginning to alienate Iraqis," General Sanchez said, referring to military operations. "I started to get those sensings from multiple sources, all the way from the Governing Council down to average people."

[Sanchez said he was told:] "when you take a father in front of his family and put a bag over his head and put him on the ground, you have had a significant adverse effect on his dignity and respect in the eyes of his family."

The Times article adds a whole lot of talk about "transition point", as if it was OK for General Blount's boys to kill civilians with as little thought as killing flies. Whatever.

The evidence, by the way, is that attacks on US forces went from two dozen per day to only a dozen per day. Thus, our "iron fist" policy was so successful we have to stop it immediately.

Ha ha ha.

But seriously -- thanks, General Sanchez. Also seriously, we have to wonder how long General Sanchez will last in Rummy's army in Bremer's colony.

But speaking of Bremer.... Has he disappeared? Last we heard, the plan was to dump Bremer and put James Baker in. But, of course that was a premature rumor cuz Baker wouldn't take the job. But where does that leave Bremer? Where does that leave Iraq? Why not just let General Sanchez run it?
