"The failure of Bush's national security team to recognize the threat of al-Qaeda, even after they were clearly warned, will rank among the most serious mistakes ever made by U.S. government officials." --Joe Conason
Conason continues: "They had billed themselves as 'the grown-ups,' condescending to the Democrats they replaced and asserting that their experience would return steady guidance to American policy. Instead, these veterans of previous Republican administrations fumbled and fooled around with ancillary issues while an elusive new enemy prepared to strike. They weren't prepared. They had no plan. They hadn't seen what was coming. They had ignored the warnings. Their judgment was as deluded as their self-image."

Speaking of LIES, AND THE LYING LIARS WHO TELL THEM, A FAIR AND BALANCED LOOK AT THE RIGHT, how about so-called journalist Chris Matthews?
"There is something inaccurate in your book, because you said that she was on my show, HARDBALL, eight times. I would be surprised if she was on once." --Matthews
Turns out, the vicious right-wing hate-monger Ann Coulter was on the Matthews show *eight* times in the past two months, and somewhre around fifty times in the past two years.
Can Matthews be thinking it's "plausibly deniable" that he could remember having Coulter on the show? Nonsense.
It was a LIE, and a LIE that proved Conason's point.
What should a LIAR do when caught? Apologize. Explain what led him to the lie. Correct the situation by publicizing the error and never making the same mistake again.
Not all humans do that, of course, but the special position of journalism in a democracy requires it of journalists -- even pseudo-journalists like Matthews. Anything else betrays America and American democracy.
