PhotoFrom the current Anchorage Press, a great story about the Alaska DMV and personalized license plates. Particularly funny are the letters sent to the DMV and the DMV responses. Here's a great example of a DMV reply:

Dear J.D.,
I apologize for your distress in receiving the denial on plate name OOSIK. The decision to refuse the issuance of these plates is not based on race, culture or an ethnic group, it is based on the meaning of the word itself; my understanding of the word OOSIK means a walrus penis or penis. We would not allow penis in English, or any other language to appear on a plate if it can be avoided. The decision is based on a group of individuals, not a single person. An Eskimo individual who works with us expressed concern that even if the culture uses everything from the animal, that OOSIK may be offensive to some Eskimo individuals. It’s the meaning or translation of the word that we use to make our decisions. It can be English, Spanish or French. If it has the potential of being offensive, we do not allow it to be processed.

Sincerely,

Elizabeth Henderson (of DMV)
