Phil's off buying a Palm based PDA today. My meager 2 MB Palm V is three years old. I've been waiting, for what seems like eons, for 802.11b capabilities to become available in the Palm world before I finally upgrade. At last, the new Palm OS 5 finally has both Bluetooth (which I don't care about in the handheld realm) and 802.11b - which I do care about in a big way.
So my new dream PDA is the Sony Clie PEG-NX70V (Sony really has to do something about its product naming conventions). It will have a slot for an 802.11b card (Sony only of course) and has all of the other totally cool Sony Clie stuff - a slot for 128 mb memory stick (comes with 16 mb), fabulous color screen, nice little keyboard, camera (!) and a built in MP3 player. As this CNET article points out, there is one real down issue - the wireless card is an add on instead of built in. I agree - what's up with that? But, I may go ahead and be an early adopter on this one. I've been waiting a long time.
The PEG-NX70V (sounds like an ID number for a Federation Star Ship) will be available for preorder on October 2nd. The units themselves will be available in early November.
Note: what is pictured to the right is a NR70V - very close in appearance to what the NX70V will look like.
