Minnie This month's online Smithsonian Magazine features an article about Sarah Colley Cannon, otherwise known to Grand Ole Opry fans as "Minnie Pearl". She was a true Southern belle with razor-sharp wit who left behind not only a legacy of comedy but also helped establish the Minnie Pearl Cancer Foundation. "How-deeeee! I’m just so proud to be here!" Minnie declared each Saturday night from the Opry stage to a studio audience, relaying the latest happenings from back home in Grinder’s Switch, an imaginary hamlet not far from Nashville, its name appropriated from an actual country railroad junction. She bore gossipy tidbits about relatives and friends—Brother, Uncle Nabob, Aunt Ambrosia, Doc Payne, Lizzie Tinkum and Hezzie, Minnie’s ever-elusive and painfully dense "feller." When, for example, Minnie suggested to Hezzie that it was time they married, he answered, "Why, who would have us?" (from Smithsonian Magazine - March 2003) 12:44:45 PM comment []

The Tile MachineHere's a nice little Saturday distraction - create an online tile with the Tile Machine and save it to your desktop to use as a background. Here's mine - pretty pathetic even at a first attempt, but it's fun. C'mon, get creative! 10:41:18 AM comment []

Saturday musingsWhat a beautiful morning it is here! Sunshine, blue skies and hot coffee...a great start to a much-needed break from the weekly work routine. We took Belle to get her first series of puppy shots yesterday. I was a little concerned about her first ride in the car because she is so rambunctious, but she suprised me by sitting quietly and calmly in the backseat without making the slightest whimper. We dropped her off early in the morning, and she stayed all day until we could pick her up when I got off work. She must have been on her best behavior all day because Dr. Ken pronounced her a "sweet, pretty dog". Scott and I just looked at each other wondering if Dr. Ken had been drinking. Pretty, yes. Sweet, questionable. I have no doubt that if Dr. Ken's bifocals had been within Belle's reach at any time during her stay, we would have walked away with a much larger vet bill... Last night we watched One Hour Photo with Robin Williams reminding us that anyone can be a lunatic given the right high-tech photolab equipment and an abusive childhood. Three stars, and that's pushing it. Not bad, just very creepy and not for kids. I'm off to catch up on the news...have a great day :) 8:42:07 AM comment []
