CityBlogging seems like a natural evolution of weblogging. I do worry about the quality and validity of the stories - but then again, in the real media world we have things like Fox News.
At the very local level - local events and such - this is probably very useful.

Your own CMU Mars Rover to inspire your creativity. If this happens I need to have one!
Mechanical things are wonderful to play around with - in my day we had Erector sets and Legos ... Lego still survives and has expanded into electro-mechanical wonders. A potentially wonderful toy comes from the Caltech spinout Evolution -- basically a moving platform for laptops with some interesting software. Currently it is Windows only, but they are thinking seriously about ports to "interesting" operating systems including OS X.

Power from your local telco :)
On a more serious note the energy drain from little devices is serious and significant when you add them up and consider they are usually on all the time (things with vampire bricks and always on appliances).
