Lord of the Rings today! I've been waiting a year for The Two Towers and finally it is almost here!

The movie combines "normal" special effects with a huge amount of computer generated work - some of the most impressive stuff has been done with Massive. Take a look at the special effects section of the official Lord of the Rings site for interesting bits and pieces.

Of course the fan site is the best source of information for the fan, but it is something of a firehose.

Salon is offering an excerpt of a full cast BBC dramatization of The Two Towers. I won't go there yet as I have the wonderful Ian Holm BBC reading on CD. I had first heard pieces of their version years ago on the BBC World Service and was delighted to find a set for sale on Amazon. Highly recommended!!!

Salon also has an essay by David Brin on LoTR - highly recommended. Why not have a look at it through Sauron's eyes?

It just struck me - I haven't read Bored of the Riings (Harvard Lampoon when it was actually good) since I was in high school. At the time it struck me as one of the funniest things I had ever read.

Recommended music for the day is Bernstein's performance of Copland's Appalachian Spring (Sony Masterworks MK 39442). He absolutely nails it. The quiet moments of the various variations of a Shaker tune can move you through time and space.
