Good Yule and Happy Solstice to those of you who celebrate!
9:05:05 AM

It is interesting to note that Time is giving bloggers credit for moving Trent Lott's commentary to the mainstream (page 2 of the article).

This is particularly interesting as most of the media represents blogging as shrill right wing and liberatarian diatribe when, in reality, it is much broader.

I wonder if the Republican Southern Strategy will change as a result - somehow I doubt it as the under-educated white male who is so important to this strategy is still onto things like the Confederate Flag, State's Rights and other links to racism. It is very important that the pressure be kept up to change the party. I doubt that the Democrats have the will at this point - note their fear of calling Mr Lott and others like him what they really are...

I hope this isn't over - the party can't have it both ways. It is clearly time to go after Mr Ashcroft and others who are very similar to Mr Lott. Racism isn't necessarily a conservative ideal, but these folks toil on making it otherwise.

The question of who watches the watchers seems to be central these days. It is disturbing watching incompetent people gain access to sensitive data. Interpreting it incorrectly and misapplying it can be dangerous.

Our law enforcement agencies have not demonstrated that they are clueful about the use of legally acquired data.

An inter-face and a tip of the hat to Bart for this one..

For a couple of months I've been trying to get folks interested in RSS and news aggregation. Here is a nice first exposure to RSS.

You should really give a news aggregator a spin. The best I've seen is NetNewsWire. This is one area where the best app happens to be on the Mac platform - I've seen a dozen Windows aggregators and none of them seem inspired.

AOL, through their ICQ acquisition, has been granted a patent on Instant Messaging. It seems that the Patent Office did a bad job on this one as that sort of technology has been around since the dawn of computer networks ...Plato is about thirty years old...

AOL is in serious trouble these days and many suggest that it has strayed from its core values. Michael Wolff has an interesting view on this - perhaps it was all about being dirty... I wouldn't go that far, but moving their focus away from personal communication seems to be not entirely clueful.

If you need some last minute coupons to stretch your dollars ...

Many of these places exist, but this one is updated daily and covers the major online and clicks-and-mortar retailers.
