Walnuts are unique among nuts because the fat in walnuts is primarily polyunsaturated, the source of important omega-3 fatty acids. Studies indicate that omega-3s lower cholesterol, and protect against heart disease and stroke. According to Liz Weiss, MS, RD, "Omega-3 fatty acids help reduce the risk of heart disease because they make the blood less sticky. They prevent platelets from sticking together and forming very dangerous clots." New dietary guidelines (October 2000) from the American Heart Association recommend moderate total fat intake and two servings of fish a week to provide polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids. Walnuts are another excellent source of omega-3s and they're easy to add to your diet.
I do a yummy breakfast yogurt thing that includes a sprinkling of chopped walnuts on top. It is made with non-fat plain yogurt, about 1 cup. I then add 1/2 banana, sliced and about 3/4 cup fresh or frozen (defrosted) fruit. I especially like strawberries, blueberries and raspberries. If you can't find these fresh, buy them in bags in the frozen section. I sprinkle about a teaspoon of wheatgerm on top and about a tablespoon of chopped walnuts. This is VERY good and good for you too!
