Pondering Poppies
Isn't it quite amazing when, totally out-of-the-blue, something practically slaps you in the face and seems to say, "HEY...look at me!" That's how it was today as I took my daily walk along the creekbed. There amongst the rocks and certainly hidden for most other passerbys, was a "volunteer" California Poppy. In a place where only an errant seed must have been blown by the wind or perhaps dropped by some feathered creature on extremely poor soil. Yet, this plant somehow, found a method by which to germinate and survive with apparently little water or nutrients. And that got me thinking how some people are like that. You know, those who endure hardship and desperation. Someone who has had a rough go at it and still, somehow, survives. Without the luxuries that most of us are blessed with, these people also seem to find "nourishment" even when there is but barren ground all around. And like this flower, it is quite possible to outshine all those that surround them. Perhaps we should take note of how nature can overcome great adversity and attempt to apply that to our own lives when we encounter even the most bare of circumstance.

Adversity is the first path to Truth.-Lord Byron
