Commoditizing IT
ZDnet has long been one of my favorite web resources. Ever since I first downloaded LView Pro and first discovered WINZIP there many years ago.
Recently Dave Farber became the managing editor at ZDnet , replacing Jesse Berst. Although I really liked Jesse, I've learned to appreciate Dave.
In my reading today I happened on a piece by Dave titled "The end of IT as we know it?". I feel a bit funny about recommending this article, as it is written in response to a Nicholas Carr story titled "IT Doesn't Matter".
You'll need to purchase "IT Doesn't Matter" to get the whole story, but follow this link to get a flavor for the discussion that was sparked.
The issues raised by both Farber and Carr are important and both get me thinking. The point of the articles is that IT is a commodity. Certainly important for a business, but one that holds little strategic value. That's a tough concept for IT types to get a grasp on. We all want to think that what we do is the most important part of running a business...........
