Back to My Roots
Wednesday and Thursday have been fun. I was in Tropic, Utah helping on a wiring project. Unlike my experience last week placing a 10' dish on Bald Mesa, I do have some experience in cabling.
I started my cabling career in 1975. That was a time when we mostly pulled 25 pair cable and most of it already had the amphenol end attached, presenting some unique obstacles. It was also a time when we did everything on an installation from pulling and terminating the cables, to installing all of the control equipment, to placing the telephones. It wasn't a time of specialization like we have now.
So we pulled 100+ Cat 5 drops throughout Tropic Elementary. Most of this work was done on Wednesday. Thursday morning we pulled 18 drops into the computer lab at the High School. Those cables were terminated by a beautiful hollow wall that accommodated an inside cable drop perfectly. Ah, the joys of uninsulated walls!
I shouldn't try to list those involved, but here goes. There were 2 students from the Cyber Corps program who helped, plus 5 regional staff (Cory, Melanie, Jack, Steve and Alan) and at least 2 district staff (Lynn and Gerrold). We all worked together and it was surprising just how much was accomplished. We finished Wednesday at around 8:00 PM without a break for lunch. On Thursday most of the work was concluded by 11:00 AM.
I had fun. And I got to know these people better. My only request is that they invite me back next time.......
