Jim's Pond - Exploring the Universe of Ideas
"Beware when the great God lets loose a thinker on this planet. Then all things are at risk. It is as when a conflagration has broken out in a great city, and no man knows what is safe, or where it will end." --Ralph Waldo Emerson

NANOG

Well.......

NANOG is over and a few days in the past. Time to evaluate our participation.

The NANOG management has been difficult to deal with. Real control freaks. I suppose you can't blame them. It's a premier conference and their reputation and future are on the line. I can live with that.

Pete was gone a good bit over the past couple of weeks and almost none existent for from Friday until Tuesday late. In addition, he has been stressed out thinking about all of his peers that would be visiting Utah.

For three days Operators from the best networks around the world met in Salt Lake City. We listened to their ideas and discussed important issues. I had lunch with Cisco's top multicast engineer on Monday. On Tuesday I met with a Cisco engineer to discuss BGP design. He traveled to the conference from Australia. Previously I'd only been able to swap e-mail messages with him.

Pete mingled with some peering coordinators from some big networks. He thinks that progress was made. It sounds promising.

Worries about our Internet connection kept me away from some of the Tuesday sessions. Being in our town caused some distractions and additional stress.

NANOG has been a lot of work. It seems that it was worth the effort. Time will tell......
