"Beware when the great God lets loose a thinker on this planet. Then all things are at risk. It is as when a conflagration has broken out in a great city, and no man knows what is safe, or where it will end." --Ralph Waldo Emerson

IT Mercenaries - Part 2

Of course, the overwhelming majority of IT Professionals are not mercenaries. And those who have displayed mercenary tendencies in the past may be suffering in this down economy. It seems that IT has been hit especially hard.

For the few positions we've hired for in the past year there have always been large numbers of applicants. Highly qualified applicants who seem eager to accept below market (or is that new market) wages.

So this brings me back to ideas about commoditizing IT. There is a scary trend facing us. No company can live without information and Information Technology. But no company wants to pay a premium for IT services.

Meaning........

That there is going to be constant pressure, from now until forever, to reduce the complexity of technology and reduce the cost of IT. That is the promise of the "plug and play" world. It isn't a reality now, just a promise. And while those in the know can laugh at the notion, it will happen one day.

Well, not really. The cost of IT will come down by degrees. It won't just happen in a day. In fact, it is already happening and will continue on into our future. Prepare now.

We can prepare by making ourselves part of the business that we support. IT can still be strategic, in spite of what has been written and said to the contrary. But we can't be strategic just by having technology available, or by installing the latest and greatest technology to support a business.

The future belongs to the IT professional who becomes a part of the business that he/she supports. The strategic nature of technology is contained in identifying strategic directions of an organization and aligning the technology to fit those directions........
