Jim's Pond - Exploring the Universe of Ideas
"Beware when the great God lets loose a thinker on this planet. Then all things are at risk. It is as when a conflagration has broken out in a great city, and no man knows what is safe, or where it will end." --Ralph Waldo Emerson

Listening

When it comes to business what skill is most valued? What skill is most important for an employee to possess? What skill is most marketable? What skill should we all be developing?

A few years ago being a DBA was very marketable. Right now it seems that having a good foundation in security is a sure ticket to high paying success. BGP routing knowledge isn't a bad way to go, either.

But things always change and today's hot area may become tomorrow's tape slingers.

Bill Jensen, author of the book "Simplicity", speculates that the skill that will be around for a long time, and that companies will be anxiously pay big money to those who have it, is Listening. Jensen's point is compelling.

But what exactly does it mean to have the listening skill? How does one go about acquiring this skill? Questions that I would be foolish to try to answer.

I do know that I'm going to work harder on this area, and try to further develop the skill of listening...........
