It's the Simple Things
A wild cherry tree grows in the stream bed behind my house. Right now it's loaded with cherries. The skin is red but the meat is still a pale yellow. They aren't ripe but they are still full of sweet juice.
Today on my morning walk I stopped at the cherry tree. Champ ran on ahead, but was soon back to find out what was going on. I was picking a few cherries and carefully checking around the pits. It's probably too early for the worms, but you never know. And getting a worm filled cherry isn't pleasant.
Anyway, while so occupied, out of the corner of my eye, I noticed the lower branches of the tree swaying. I looked to see why. Champ was busy biting the cherries on that branch. I stopped to watch.
At first he was dropping each cherry after biting it. After a few cherries he stopped and started eating those that were on the ground. He must have tasted that sweet juice. After cleaning up those cherries on the ground he started biting and eating the other cherries still on the tree.
I picked a handful of cherries to take with me. Champ followed along on our walk, constantly begging for those sweet red things in my hand. I didn't get many of the cherries. It was fun to see how much he liked them and how anxious he was for me to share.
It's probably a mistake. We just had our carpets cleaned this week. The cherries will likely do some nasty things to Champ's system. And he may have an accident or two on our newly cleaned carpets. Oh, well. Call it a tribute to our cleaning guy........
