Strategic Planning
I'm generally not too interested in a "what I did today" blog. But today I just can't help myself.
Over the past few weeks I've been working on the UEN Technical Services Strategic plan. It's not finished yet and still needs to go to the Steering Committee. I've taken input from my staff to make sure this is a thorough document.
One problem. It isn't strategic. It is really more a list of all the projects that either will be addressed in the next 12 months or at least should be. In some ways it is a dream because there isn't enough money or enough time to get to everything. Still, I bet that at the end of the year it will be surprising to see how much gets done.
What bugged me is that I had most of the document completed prior to today. All that remained this morning was to incorporate a few pieces of input from my Technical Services managers into the document. Writing these ideas on a note pad wouldn't have taken more than 15 minutes.
Cutting and pasting should have taken no more than five minutes. So why was I still struggling with the document after three hours. All I can say is:
Microsoft Word
When I tell this to people who have worked with the "outlining feature" of word the most common reaction is a knowing nod and a statement about how Word has a mind of its own.
My wife tells me that at times she could engrave a document in stone faster.
Is this what technology is supposed to be about? I'd rather manually indent the lines and add the numbers. And Word doesn't really allow me to do that. So if what I want to do conflicts with what Bill's boys had in mind who wins? Not me.........
