Do the Right Thing?
Here's an interesting item in USA Today's sports section:
When filmmaker Spike Lee said in a taped segment on ABC's NBA Hangtime on Sunday, "Listen to the white media and it is like nobody has ever played basketball before" Larry Bird, studio analyst Byron Scott said, "I don't care if you talk white, black, green, (Bird) was great. Period. End of story."
Lee is black, and Bird is white; the exchange is reminiscent of the kerfuffle last fall in which ESPN ousted Rush Limbaugh as a football commentator because Limbaugh said the media were overpraising Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb, who is black. So where's the outrage over Lee's remarks? The lack thereof is almost enough to make one thing there's a double standard when it comes to race in America. [WSJ]

Hobby: buying used hard drives on eBay and unerasing the data for fun
My friend Simson Garfinkel wrote a great piece on the foolishness of selling hard drives that haven't been sanitized:
"Since then, I have repeatedly indulged my habit for procuring and then analyzing secondhand hard drives. (...) Last summer, I started buying drives en masse on eBay.
"In all, I bought and analyzed the content of more than 150 drives(...) In fact, only 10 percent of the drives I purchased had been properly sanitized.
"Much of the data we found was truly shocking. One of the drives once lived in an ATM. It contained a year's worth of financial transactions—including account numbers and withdrawal amounts—from a organization that had a legal requirement to not divulge such information. Two other drives contained more than 5,000 credit card numbers—it looked as if one had been inside a cash register. Another had e-mail and personal financial records of a 45-year-old fellow in Georgia. The man is divorced, paying child support and dating a woman he met in Savannah. Plane returning to LA?
I never watch the news on TV unless it's something local I know is going to be shown.
I live where I can see all the airline traffic in and out of LA from the north. While standing in the backyard this morning I saw something I have never seen in all my years here. A 747 turned and headed back almost directly over my house. I watch with binoculars but could see no obvious signs of distress.
Would all of you news watchers do me a favor and see if there is any mention of a plane returning to LA today for any reason and send me an email.

Short Memories and Bad Attitudes

Israel Signals The End of One-Sided Negotiations
I am sure that this rhetoric will result in all the usual moaning from the usual (EUsual?) suspects, who somehow believe that Israel should continue to hold meetings with the leadership of terrorist organizations that have made clear that Israel must not be allowed to exist. Israel has done exactly that during the so-called intifadas, and it resulted in absolutely no respite from bombings. Israel tried building a wall, and the EU dragged them into the Hague. Israel announced a plan to simply withdraw from Gaza and take the settlers with them, and even that wasn't good enough for Israel's allies. [Captain's Quarters]

Nothing Left to Lose
"That is what these three-plus years of Intifada have done to the Israeli public.
They see that when we try to make nice and compromise we get terror attacks. And when we're tough and aggressive we get terror attacks. I want my 20 years back!
I gave 20 years of my life, 10 years away from my family, and missed watching my kids grow up so these asshats can have a day in the park without fear of being arrested or run over by a tank. I sometimes wonder if it was worth it.
