Mercurial America
"Congress's leading Democratic voices on foreign policy, with a trace of the disdain that so rankles Europeans, suggested that their critical view of the European Union's weaknesses was intact, and that in puckering up for a November embrace Europe might have to settle for a formalistic kiss." Tin Ear from the Armed Liberal
"I'm having one of my bang-my-head-against-the-keyboard moments again. If you wonder why I do it more often when liberals do something amazingly boneheaded, it's because I'm a liberal, and I JUST HATE IT when I see things that convince me that we're going to be sleeping on the porch for the next few weeks." "Speech delivery counts for little on the world stage unless you have convictions and, yes, the vision to see beyond the front row seats. The Democrats may remember their lines, but how quickly they forget the lessons of the past. I have witnessed five major wars in my lifetime, and I know how swiftly storm clouds can gather on a peaceful horizon. The next time a Saddam Hussein takes over a Kuwait, or North Korea brandishes a nuclear weapon, will we be ready to respond? In the end it all comes down to leadership. That is what this country is looking for now. It was leadership here at home that gave us strong American influence abroad and the collapse of imperial communism. Great nations have responsibilities to lead, and we should always be cautious of those who would lower our profile, because they might just wind up lowering our flag." --Ronald Reagan [found at American RealPolitik]

Got one!
"Well, wake up and smell the falafel, Dems.....we're at war. It ain't neat, it ain't fun, and it ain't clean. It never has been, and never will be. In my opinion, the Democrats have shown how unserious they are in these deadly serious times. What's worse is that I think many of them understand the seriousness, but choose not to say it for fear of upsetting the base of the Democratic Party.
One day I woke up and decided, well, if that's the base of the Party, I want no affiliation with it. I don't have a lot of money, time, or influence, but I do like to write, so write I did. The day after the Democrats lost the mid-term elections in 2002 and began to move their leadership to the left as a result, I wrote letters to Party leaders telling them it was a mistake. I got no response. I called locally. No response. I even sent an article to a conservative publication online telling them " I am a Democrat and I think my party's wrong." No response."

Points to Ponder
"I think Richard Clarke, the single point he's making -- he hurt his own credibility by not being willing to criticize the Clinton administration. So the single point he winds up making is that George Bush should have done in eight months what the Clinton administration failed to do in eight years. And on its face, that's a ridiculous proposition." --Kate O'Beirne [American RealPolitik]
