I made this morning's delivery in Chicago, IL with 5-minutes to spare. That's cutting it a little too close!
I ran into the leftovers of hurricane Dennis today. We need the rain!
My next assignment was to pick-up a shipment in Green Bay, WI and deliver it to Chicago. However, my 14-hour day would have ended somewhere between Milwaukee, WI and Chicago. (Any time I'm within 250 miles of home, I'd prefer to sleep in my own bed!) So, dispatch instead decided to have me still pick-up the trailer in Green Bay but then drop it at the warehouse in Milwaukee. Someone else would be able to take the trailer the rest of the way to Chicago.
Dispatch also had me ride with another driver to pick up an empty tractor near the Green Bay area and use that to bring the trailer back to Milwaukee. Mr. "M" and I had a good chat on the way towards Green Bay. I enjoyed our conversation. ("M" -- thanks again for the coffee!)
After picking up the truck, I proceeded to Green Bay, hooked on to the trailer, and hightailed it for home. Mr. "J" (day dispatch) was none too pleased that I couldn't make my previously assigned route in the morning. Since my 14-hour day ended so late in the day, that meant I couldn't deliver on time to my first drop (after taking my 10-hour break) in the morning. In the end, Mr. J. did manage to trade my route with another driver's route. So, my new route is due at noon in Chicago tomorrow. Looks like I'll get to watch a bit of the All-Star Baseball game after all!
