This morning, my "alarm clock" turned out to be the local truck stop hooker. She (I'm assuming "she" was a "she") knocked on the side of the truck shortly after midnight (about an hour before I had planned to get up). I rolled over and tried to get back to sleep, but, after tossing and turning a bit, I decided to get up. I had a good night's rest so I wasn't too peeved that my "wake-up" call was earlier than I expected.
I rolled into the warehouse around 3:30 AM, unloaded my return freight, and learned that there wasn't any freight for me to take out. So I headed for home and with nothing else to do, went to bed again. I fell asleep fairly quickly (somewhat surprising since I had some coffee on the way back to the warehouse) and slept for a couple-of-hours.
After getting up, I called dispatch. My assigned load for later in the day was in Iowa. After some time with the family, I left for the warehouse and departed in mid-afternoon.
Part of the way there, another company driver and I shared the same stretch of road (he was going to Dubuque, IA while I was going to Cedar Rapids, IA).
There drive there was beautiful--sunny, cool, and a slight breeze. Since it was cooler, not as many bugs hit the windshield (although they were a colorful bunch that popped into the window. One thing I noticed this time going down to Cedar Rapids on 151 was that the farm houses are all adjacent to the road (the others times I've traveled this road have been in the dark with rotten weather). That struck me as kind of weird since most of the double-lane highways I've traveled seemed to have the farmhouses set off in the distance from the road. At least these farmers don't have long driveways to shovel in the winter!
A great sunset greeted me as I ended my journey coming into Cedar Rapids. Tomorrow I've got two stops and then it's turn-around time. I just may be able to make my son's last T-ball session of the year if all goes well.
