2003 Denver Mayoral Election
Building on the stories from last week and yesterday the Denver Rocky Mountain News asked a few of the candidates in the mayoral race their opinions on Zavaras' revelations on his college career and the donation of his pension. The Denver Post is running this article.
My own take is that Zavaras' truthfulness will not become an issue. The voters are not paying attention to the race. It is refreshing though to see some passion being interjected into what has been a very dull election so far and credibility issues could sink anyone.
So what did they say? Penfield Tate, "There is no way you could not know you flunked out of two schools. I wouldn't need my campaign to check that out. This is another huge credibility issue." Susan Casey, "You set the tone as mayor. If the perception exists that you might not always tell the truth, you might not always take responsibility for your actions, it sends the opposite message of what a city leader must send." Don Mares, "Let's have some disclosure around these issues to allow the public to judge." Elizabeth Schlosser said that Zavaras "may be a cop, but he's not a straight shooter" and forecasted that his campaign is on its way out, according to the Post. John Hickenlooper, "My feeling is that Denver voters are going to demand a high level of high accountability from their mayor, and they're entitled to that." Fun stuff, now on to the police "spy files."
The Denver Student Voices project is running a story about their mayoral forum last week. The students asked questions about jobs, transportation, and crime. Hell some of 'em will even be able to vote May 6th. Get out and register all your friends and family y'all.
