Sum Total
Among my many philosophies, I have come to believe that our lives are influenced by a great many things, not the least of which are the people we come in contact with. And while that in itself is no great revelation, I would venture to say that each of us is, in fact, the sum total of all those souls who cross our path. Like a single grain of sand we are insignificant but when we intermingle and exchange dispositions, a beautiful beach may be had. We see that ambitious person at the office who strives to be the best, or the caring friend who would sacrifice themself for our happiness. And what about that family member who loves completely and unconditionally, surely they are of great influence. Even in youth did you not emulate that one special teacher, which to this day, you cannot forget? Of course, being human we retain no prejudice only for the favorable attributes, but seem to pursue the disagreeable as well. Certainly you have acquainted yourself with persons of envy, averace and malcontent. Our personality can show signs of distrust, jealousy and hostility, even though we have little intention of doing so. We are creatures of learned behaviors and the people we surround ourselves with tend to rub off on us. These passing associations do not necessarily assure future traits, in fact, they may even be a positive influence as to which characteristics not to cultivate. No man is an island and each environment has many influences, but perhaps we should ocassionally take note of the company we keep, affirm the affable, discard the distasteful and oppose the objectionable.
