Determination
For more than an hour I watched a pair of Nuttall's Woodpeckers systematically search for and retrieve their days meal. Pounding away at the bark of a denuded tree stopping only long enough to half cock their heads to eye-ball the target, they persisted seemingly unaware of my presence. So I began to think just how determined these feathered beings were. How futile it seemed to me, all that pounding and chipping for what...a single bug? A morsel so small that it would appear to me, insignificant. But determined they were. Thrusting again and again at the bark loosening and lifting, scratching and tapping then moving on to begin again. Such a display that even I began to feel a bit guilty when I thought about how easy my life is in comparison. Certainly I do not have to scratch and claw for my meals. Perhaps we can all learn a lesson from these woodpeckers that we should count our blessings and that our own determination, even for the small things, can reap great rewards!

It has never been my object to record my dreams, just the determination to realize them.-Man Ray
