Stoic Entertainment
After a wonderful leisurely lunch on the pier I decided upon a contemplative stroll along this boardwalk to its furthest reaches. Along the way I happened upon a California Brown Pelican, a most regal bird. Large in size, he sat ever so stoic on the railing as people passed by. Children gawking in awe, he continued to sit. Visitors with cameras, not quite convinced, snapped photos and he still sat. He sat there in apparent disregard for the show before him which I thought, he must have seen so many times before. And I wondered just what he must be thinking. How silly these people must have appeared to him, for he was simply sitting there, not begging for food, not preening before the flashbulbs...merely sitting and watching. Perhaps he was simply resting after a long flight from some previous fishing expedition or maybe, just collecting the warmth upon his feathers. But I would still like to imagine that this, to him, was a sort of entertainment...that which the other birds seem to neglect!
