New Year Walk

I began this new year, as I do each year, with an early morning walk along the beach. The coolness of the morning, the smell of the sea and the sound of the surf made for an invigorating adventure. Even on this day in winter, one can find many people out and about...surfing, walking their dogs or simply enjoying the sun as I did.Surf In some places the surf was crashing upon the rocks while in others, gently lapping at the foam covered tideline. Shore birds aplenty ran back and forth scooping up small tidbits apparently unaware of my presence. Pieces of kelp and other flotsom carried high onto the shore bespoke of earlier hours when I was yet asleep. It is certain that the sea knows not of the new year, in fact, it ebbs and flows today as yesterday and the day before. Still, I wonder at its resolve to persist. It was a wonderful day, the first of many I hope to encounter this year.

People seem to think there is something inherently noble and virtuous in the desire to go for a walk.-Max Beerbohm
