Breaking the sound barrier
"One of my heroes is Chuck Yeager who was the first man to fly faster than the speed of sound. He accomplished this flying the Bell X-1 in October 1947 but, because of the Cold War, the US Air Force did not release the infomation for over eight months, so Yeager never received the world-wide fame that he deserved. A couple of weeks ago, an aircraft flew for the first time at seven times the speed of sound, although the X-43A was unpiloted. The event received a fair bit of publicity. I decided to use some of the Easter break to write up a short account of how we went from Mach 1 to Mach 7."  [NightHawk]
Thanks Roger for putting it all in one place for us aviation geeks.
I flew back seat in TA-4's in the late 60's.  One day while killing time over the desert waiting for the AF boys we were to play with that day, I casually said to the pilot, "It's too bad this plane won't go supersonic.  Without saying a word the nose of the plane dropped to a 45 degree angle and I watched as the mach gage quickly climbed to 1.1.  After leveling the pilot said, "You mean like that?"
